I feel cheated buying a product wich depends of an internet connection for being useful.
The hardware is very good, but I don't know who was the idiot wich proposed the online compiler.
My grade is F for the mbed while the compiler still being only online.
Not mentioning the lack of protection to the code, allowing any jerk to steal your code.
Useless product and waste of money, due to the "CLOUD" and the community idea...
Good to make toys... No... not really.
Someone can refund me ? I don't think so...

From the point of view of hobbyists, it's a good thing... Till the day wich they will find better options.
What I'm trying to say is that you have an excellent product in hardware. But you really you screwed it up with this compiler.
The potential of mbed's hardware is very impressive.
Yes, I can use gcc... But without libs... I prefer to buy a microcontroller only.
I will give you an idea.
Why to not attach your on-line compiler into mbed memory and access it by USB ?
The answer for this is what make me not to trust on your system.
You don't feel comfortable releasing your code, but you are asking me to put my code in your server ? No sorry.

Where did you buy it? If you (and the shop) are situated in EU, you have 7 days to decide that you want to return it and the seller must accept it. You might have to pay the return shipping.

For me it was perfectly clear the compiler was online. I see it as one of the major strong points of the mbed. Wherever I go I only need to bring the mbed and log in to my account and connect the USB cable and I can continue where I left off even fully OS independent.
The mbed uses just a NXP ARM CPU so feel free to use any other means to program these CPU's there are tools in abundance for ARM.
@Giovanni:
What did make you decide to buy the mbed ?

The mbed uses a 1768 processor. There are MANY offline compilers that you can use (coocox, kiel, crossworks - the list goes on) - and even articles on how to take an mbed program and use in the off line tool chains. Most of them (apart from coocox) are either chargeable, or have functional limits on the free versions (kiels 32K compile limit for example). mbed is a fantastic product for hobbyist and prototyping solutions. As with all things you must go into this 'eyes open'. It's very clear that the mbed uses an online compiler.
If you do need an offline compiler and don't want to buy one, then go for coocox ide with the arm \ gcc compiler. you can still use the mbed libraries (and others) with the offiline compilern.
Personally I'd like to *thank* mbed for their innovative solution. Hardware platform - excellent. Online compiler - great !!

I really like the online complier. It fits for the purpose. Maybe this is not the topic but, I couldn't find any.
So, I can suggest some properties that would be fine. For example; code regions that can be minimized like in uVision and function list that we can select the functions would be perfect..
I guess you already know these issues and you will improve the complier. But I would like to learn that when it is possible.
