How to connect these old magjacks?

31 Jan 2011

Hi everyone,

I have a few of these old magjacks left over from previous projects, but I'm not sure how to connect them properly to the Mbed.

Anyone out there that can help me?

Pretty please!

  • P1: No connection
  • P2: No connection
  • P3: +3.3 volts, with at least 100 nF to ground.
  • P4: TD+
  • P5: TD-
  • P6: RD+
  • P7: RD-
  • P8: +3.3 volts, with at least 100 nF to ground.

If the jack is more than a few cm from the mbed, use CAT5 wire for the interconnect: one twisted pair for P4/P5, and another for P6/P7.

Edit: P8 should also be pulled up; bypass caps should be at least 100nF, per the DP83848J PHY spec.

Should P8, the rx center tap, also be hooked to 3.3 volts like it is on the tx side? That's the way I've seen it on other hookup diagrams and of course I have no clue why.

You are right, Tom. That's what the data sheet for the DP83848J recommends http://www.national.com/ds/DP/DP83848J.pdf.

I've corrected the earlier post.

Thanks, I'll breadboard it and see what happens.

anyone please suggest the magjack connections to Mbed

I am using this connector( see link).

http://shop.tuxgraphics.org/snippets/magjack-08B0-1X1T-06-F.pdf

Here 2- TD + 3 - TD- 1- centre tap of transmit

4 - RD + 5 - RD- 6 - centre tap left open

7,8 led1 - I dont want to use 9,10 led2 - I dont want to use

I am confused centre tap of transmit pin is connected to 3.3 V using an inductor series in some other micro designs.( see circuit diagram section of http://tuxgraphics.org/electronics/200606/article06061.shtml for their connection)

Pl. suggest how will I connect to Mbed 1768. Can any one tell me the magjack connections.

Thanks
