I had experiences with the Parallax BasicStamp2 and have solutions running since more than 10 years (Battery charge controller for NiCd, NiMH; wireless control of a "LGB" model train system). I'm really pleased about the abilities the mbed offers. I started investigations for a 3-axis rotating manipulator. The scale model driven by model servos (PWM-control) and using a 4x20 character LCD display was easy to program. The "real-world" manipulator shall drive 3x 500W servo motors via CANopen-bus. I'm not experienced enough to get CANopen protocol to the mbed so it is expensive to have it done ($10000). If someone could point me to a cheaper opensource solution - would be great! Another project is a controller for a physiotherapy table using PWM to control the speed of a motor and a 4x20 character LCD-display.
