E Badge MiniNote 3D Enclosure Design

3D Enclosure Design

Why 3D Design

As E-ink mentioned in its web page. EPD is one under estimated technology. I agree with that point partly.

From view of marketing, EPD's killer application is E-book reader, which was killed by iPad and Pad. So far, only Amazon's kindle is making money, with rich online ebook resources. Other suppliers like SONY , is losing its share.

As a result, EPD has to find other applications which must be low power consumption, low refresh rate. The candidate applications are ESL, e-badge, luggage badge, tags and other industrial applications.

If the system can integrated other energy harvesting technologies like RFID, Qi charger, solor cell. The system could running without any power sources. A complete electronics without external power or battery. Sounds exciting!

In order to make it happen. E-Badge project offers a complete open source design, from firmware, software, and 3D design for enclosure, mini shields for hardware customization (like Arduino does). By open source 3D design, we can encourage communities from 3D design, ID and artists to join us to make the design into products quickly.

Software Used

I used FreeCAD v1.3 to design the 3D enclosure. It is easy to use, yet very powerful. You can find many free resources and designs available. Attached image comes from search engine, regarding an engine design with FreeCAD.

The export format of 3D is step, which is popular in many CAD software.
